The Austin Professional Landmen’s Association (“APLA”) is pleased to announce September’s APLA luncheon.

Speaker: Brian A. Stauffer – Translator and Curator of the Spanish Collection at the Texas General Land Office.

Topic: The Spanish and Mexican Origins of Texas’s Land System The presentation will consist of 1) a brief history of Spanish and Mexican land grants in Texas 2) an overview of the Spanish Collection, and 3) slides on how to use our various resources (catalogues, land grant database, GIS).

BIO:

Brian A. Stauffer is a native of Afton, Wyoming. He holds a Ph.D. in Latin American History from the University of Texas at Austin and an M.A. in Latin American History from the University of New Mexico.  His research focuses on the religious and agrarian history of Mexico in the nineteenth century, especially on the so-called “Religionero” rebellion of 1873-1877. His published work includes a book chapter on the privatization of indigenous communal lands in nineteenth-century Michoacán and another on the Mexican Church’s responses to the anticlerical measures enacted by Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada in 1873-74. Since July 2016, he has served as the Translator and Curator of the Spanish Collection at the Texas General Land Office.
